Watercolour Concept Art

These are some water colour sketches I created depicting the Wolf and Deer in my story. They have been designed in a more cave painting-like style and were inspired from the designs from Disney's Brother Bear and Blue Sky's Ice Age. This was practise using different media techniques and styles. I wanted to use a range of different colours, even if they were not accurate to the animal's true portrayal. This was due to the fact that the range of colours at the time of the original Cave Paintings were clearly limited, but also to brighten up the images a little and give them more life than just rock colours. I also used some slight patterns and markings on the deer, similar to that of pointillism and aboriginal art.

Here are some examples of Aboriginal artwork that I found most inspiring when creating these concept images. Not only did I find these examples of Aboriginal art similar to my own intended style because of the patterns used, but I also believed that they were very similar in the way that these ancient artists simplified their characters to a point where, even though they were very basic, still kept their charm and clear understanding of what they were trying to portray. The colours in these types of artwork are very bold, which is something I want to try and avoid in my animation. However I believe that the aboriginal artowork is very important research material for my project.
