Animal Research - Wolf

For my wolf character I have done a lot of research, so that I may create a realistic interpretation but also add my own style to the animation. The first image I researched was of the Wolf's anatomy and skeletal structure. This allowed me to gain a better understanding of how a wolf moves.

My second source of research on wolves is from some real life photos of wolves in motion. With some images of wolves running I get a sense of what they look like and how to animate them in this posture. The second image is of wolves snarling and bearing their teeth, as I will need to show this in my story.

Some other inspirations of wolf designs come from existing animated films. The first is a still from the 1940 Disney film 'Bambi'. This scene involves some hunting dogs that chase and attack Bambi. The pose was perfect as reference for the scene with the wolf and the deer in my own animation

The second source of inspiration comes from an Japanese anime by Bones called 'Wolf's Rain'. I particularly like the style of the wolve's designs and used some of their characteristics when designing my own concept.

Another source of inspiration was from a Japanese film called 'Ringing Bell' which tells a story about a Ram and a Wolf. The wolf has a particularly skinny and rough design, but I love the sinister look about him and wanted to use him as a source of inspiration. Particularly when he is hunting, it offers some good poses to reference from when animating my own scene.

Finally a cave painting scene from the film Brother Bear has a very nice and stylised design of a wolf. Keeping within the design I used this as research and really liked the simplistic look of the wolf in this scene. Even though the design is very basic, it keeps well within the cave painting style and still manages to sustain a professional appearance.
